Edinburgh Visitor Levy

The Bruntsfield Hotel
faq

From 24th July 2026, a new Visitor Levy will be introduced for all paid overnight stays in Edinburgh.

We’d like to make sure you have all the information you need about what this means for your visit with us at The Bruntsfield Hotel.

What is the levy

The Visitor Levy is a small 5% charge that will be added to the cost of your accommodation. It only applies to the first five consecutive nights of your stay, no matter how long you’re with us.

Why is it being introduced?

This initiative, led by the City of Edinburgh Council, is designed to help support the city’s much-loved tourism services and infrastructure. The funds raised will be reinvested into keeping Edinburgh vibrant, welcoming, and enjoyable for all.

Who does the levy apply to?

The levy applies to all guests staying in paid accommodation within the City of Edinburgh. This includes hotels, B&Bs, hostels, serviced apartments, and campsites - so it will apply to all overnight stays here at The Bruntsfield Hotel too.

When does the levy begin?

The levy comes into effect for all overnight stays arriving from 24th July 2026 onwards, so if you’re planning a visit after this date, the charge will be included.

Are there exemptions?

There are a few exemptions, for example guests staying for charitable purposes. In these cases, the levy is paid upfront and then reclaimed through the Council. You can find full exemption details here.

Can I have an early check-in?

Your room will be ready from 3.00pm. If you need your room earlier in the day, this can be arranged, subject to availability, by either booking at the time of reservation or booking the day before arrival. You will be asked if you would like an early check-in option on our pre-arrival email.

How is it paid?

The levy is collected at the same time as your payment for your stay:
•For prepaid, non-refundable bookings, the levy will be added when you confirm your booking.
•For flexible bookings, it will be added when you settle your stay at the hotel.
•If your booking is made and prepaid via a third party, the levy is charged at the time of booking; otherwise, it will be added when you pay us directly.

Will it appear on my bill?

Yes. To keep everything clear, the levy will be itemised separately on your final bill at The Bruntsfield Hotel, so you’ll always know exactly what you are paying for.

What happens if I cancel?

If you have prepaid for your stay and a cancellation fee applies, the levy only will be refunded at the time of cancellation. If no payment has been taken, no refund is necessary.

Can I speak to someone for more guidance?

Yes, of course.
