The short answer

Edinburgh's Christmas runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The market fills East Princes Street Gardens, the funfair and family rides take the west gardens, the ice rink returns to George Street and Hogmanay closes the season from 29 December to 1 January. Entry to the markets is free; rides, trails and attractions are ticketed and sell out.

If you are choosing dates: mid-to-late November is the sweet spot. The lights are up, the market is open, the city is calm and rates have not yet reached December levels.

The Christmas markets

East Princes Street Gardens is the heart of it: around seventy wooden chalets under the castle, mulled wine, bratwurst, Scottish whisky, handmade gifts, and the Big Wheel turning sixty metres above the gardens. West Princes Street Gardens takes the family side — the funfair, the rides, the gentler end of the noise. George Street holds the Scottish market and the ice rink, and St Andrew Square hosts Santa's Stories from late November to Christmas Eve.

What a local would tell you: go twice. Once in daylight, when you can actually see what the stalls are selling and move at your own pace, and once after dark, when the castle is lit and the whole thing looks like the postcard. They are almost different places.

And the honest bit: the food and drink is priced for a festival, weekends after the first week of December are genuinely packed, and the best gift shopping is not in the gardens at all. It's ten minutes uphill on Victoria Street and the Grassmarket, or a short walk from us in Bruntsfield and Morningside, where the independent shops run their own late-night openings through December.

The light trails

Christmas at the Botanics turns ten this year, running 19 November to 30 December at the Royal Botanic Garden. The Fire Garden and the Christmas Cathedral return alongside new installations for the anniversary. It is the best of the city's festive experiences for families and for couples equally, and the weekend and pre-Christmas slots go first — book in October if you have a fixed date in mind.

Castle of Light brings projections and illuminated storytelling to Edinburgh Castle across the winter evenings, with the castle closing early to daytime visitors on show nights.

Hogmanay

Scotland does New Year properly, and Edinburgh does it better than anywhere. Edinburgh's Hogmanay runs 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 across three days: the torchlight procession, the Street Party along Princes Street, the Concert in the Gardens, and the fireworks off the castle at the bells.

It has been named one of the great travel experiences in the world, and the tickets reflect that — they go on sale early and the city sells out around them. If you are coming for Hogmanay, book the room before you book anything else.

The other tradition worth knowing: the Loony Dook on 1 January, when a large number of people who should know better wade into the Firth of Forth at South Queensferry. There is a smaller, less official version on Christmas morning at Portobello beach. Both are more fun to watch than to join.

Christmas at The Bruntsfield

When do Edinburgh's Christmas markets open in 2026?

14 November 2026, running until 3 January 2027. Most stalls and attractions open 10am to 10pm daily. They close on Christmas Day, run reduced hours on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, and finish early on the last day.

Is the Edinburgh Christmas market free?

Yes. Entry to all the market sites is free. You pay only for what you buy and for ticketed attractions — the Big Wheel, the Starflyer, the ice rink, the helter skelter and Santa's Stories. Tickets are cashless and cheaper booked online in advance.

What is the best time to visit Edinburgh for Christmas?

Mid-to-late November, or the first week of December. Everything is open, the lights are on, and you avoid both the pre-Christmas weekend crush and the peak rates of the week before the 25th. If the markets are the main reason you are coming, a midweek visit in that window is as good as Edinburgh gets.

How busy is Edinburgh at Christmas?

Very, on December weekends — and then extraordinarily busy between Christmas and New Year. The festive fortnight is the second busiest period in the Edinburgh calendar after August. Restaurants need booking, the Royal Mile is slow going, and hotel rates rise accordingly. Weekdays in November are a different city entirely.

How far is The Bruntsfield from the Christmas market?

About a twenty-five minute walk, or ten minutes by bus. We sit on Bruntsfield Place looking over Bruntsfield Links, which puts you a short walk from the Grassmarket and Victoria Street and a straightforward run down into Princes Street Gardens — close enough to walk back from the lights, far enough that you sleep.

Do I have to pay the visitor levy on a Christmas stay?

Yes. Since 24 July 2026, a 5% visitor levy applies to paid overnight accommodation across Edinburgh, charged on the room cost before VAT and capped at the first five consecutive nights. It applies year-round, to UK and overseas guests alike, and is included when you book. More detail here.
